Understanding the difference
Home care
Carers visit someone in the home they already live in. The property, tenancy and household stay exactly as they are, and support is added around the existing routine. Visits can be short and occasional or several times a day.
Supported living
The person has their own accommodation and tenancy, with support built around helping them live as independently as possible. It usually involves a wider range of support than visiting care, covering life skills, community participation and confidence alongside any personal care that is registered and appropriate.
Which one applies
Most families arranging care for an older relative are looking for home care. Supported living is more often arranged for younger adults, or through a social worker, care coordinator or commissioner. If you are unsure, we will tell you honestly which route fits, including when neither of them does.
